Save a Horse...

Rob sat down with me the other day, here are some highlights from our conversation.

Chris: How long have you been DJing?

Rob: 15 yrs! I started in college as an asst. DJ (I guess you would call it that) with Ken Berger (DJ Kenny B). I was doing an internship w/ a company he worked for and he asked me if I wanted to work with him on some DJ gigs and learn the trade. Like most college kids, it seemed like a cool way to make some cash and have fun. I had no idea I was learning such a valuable skill set from a guy who is exceptionally skilled at running an event, planning an event, music, customer service, etc. Sometimes I thought he was crazy in his attention to details and various back up plans for anything to go wrong. I realized when I got out on my own how smart he was and what valuable lessons he taught me. There was obviously a reason he was an announcer as 5 summer Olympics!

Chris: How would you describe your DJ style?

Rob: Pretty laid back. I like to have the event come to me and see how it goes. I let the music speak for itself & be the focal point. I interject myself and voice where it is needed, so I'm not the focus. I like to make sure my clients are happy and make sure the event runs smoothly and there is no stress on the them so they can mingle with guests and enjoy their day.

Chris: Can you help with the planning?

Rob: I definitely like to help plan the event and timeline as much as needed to ensure we are all on the same page. I always let my clients dictate how much involvement they want in the music selection from "I'll show up and play" to having most of the music pre-planned. I just want them to have no worries about their DJ coming into the event.

Chris: What's your favorite memory from an event?

Rob: My best memories are simple, usually just when my client makes a point to come over after the reception and give me a hug or shake my hand and tell me everything was perfect. I'm happy and can sleep well knowing we put on a great event!

Chris: What sets you apart from other DJ's?

Rob: Customer service & knowledge of music. I work hard to make sure my clients are happy and enjoy expanding my knowledge of music. It's really fun to play a song during the reception that nobody was expecting and watch as everybody goes nuts. Making an event stand out, makes the event memorable for all the right reasons!

Chris: What's playing on your radio right now? What's your favorite genre to play at events?

Rob: I like to listen to country music but don't play much of it at weddings unless it is requested. It is one of those genres you either love or hate and doesn't work at most weddings unless it's a country crowd. I enjoy playing disco & old skool R&B for the older crowd when it fits b/c it's just a fun genre of music.

Chris: Word on the street is that there are videos floating around out there that have you riding a fake horse, entertaining folks in a parking lot. Is that true?

Rob: When encouraged to do so, it is possible that I may have ridden a toy horse to the classic Big & Rich song "Save a horse, ride a cowboy" to rev up a crowd at an event or 2 or 3 or 4.......
